Why first therapy session needs to be free?

Why is it important to have a free consultation

A therapist has a responsibility to their clients to do the best they can and work safely and ethically. Until a therapist meets or is able to talk to the client it is difficult to make any assessments or check for ethical issues. You the client also needs to be given the time to to get to know your therapist before making any kind of financial commitment. In my professional opinion to charge for the first session as an online counsellor or psychotherapist is unethical, as the first session is also a time where the therapist needs to make an assessment regarding the potential clients suitability for online therapy as much as it is possible to do so in one session, this is required for assessment proposes and to check for any other contra indicators or safety concerns. It also seems unfair to me that the client may be expected to pay for a session only to find that they do not like the therapist or are turned down for further sessions by the therapist for other reasons. Finding a therapist can be quite a journey, there is so many to choose from and so many offering different types of therapy from solution focused therapy to CBT, psychodynamic, mindfulness therapy and many more besides the ones I just mentioned, the variety can be quite overwhelming or confusing making it more difficult to find what works best for you, even before you get to actually talk to a therapist. How well you connect with the therapist will be an essential part of any successful therapy, to help discover what’s best for you will normally mean a one to one chat to give you the time to see how you get on and if you find them easy to talk to and see if you feel at ease in their company, because of the human condition not every therapist is suitable for every client and people need some time to find out for themselves what they can find out before therapy starts, this is no guarantee that the therapist wont say or do something to change your view but it does reduce the possibility of a therapist client incomparability problem from the start. That’s why unlike some therapists I do not think it is ethical to charge for the first therapy session and I never have done so. I do make a distinction between standard therapy where there is an unknown number of sessions involved and payments required for a single or restricted number of sessions, for instance where the therapist charges an upfront fee for a solution or guidance focused single session and stop smoking therapy or hypnotherapy sessions where there is an expected outcome after a fixed number of sessions.

My promise to you

The first session is free and you can decide not to pay for any session after it has ended if you’re not happy with the result. I am confident that you will understand that this promise shows that I care about your right to decide for yourself what you think of the service, the freedom to say no can be as important as having the freedom to say yes. I only ask for payment after the second session has ended, you will receive a payment request that day and you can then decide to continue if you wish. If you do not pay then therapy ends at that point, all I ask is that you inform me of your choice and the payment request is cancelled.
