First session is free.

The first session it is provided free to help you make a balanced judgement before entering into further sessions. A first session normally lasts between 30  to 60 minutes depending on the situation and complexity. I do believe that it is very important that you are given the opportunity to spend some time getting to know me your prospective therapist on your terms before making any choices or committing to any obligations. This gives you the chance to ask questions or just spend some time to experience how you feel about me as a therapist and this online therapy service.

My promise to you

The first session is free and you can decide not to pay for any session if you’re not happy with the result. I am confident that you will understand that this promise shows that I care about your right to decide for yourself what you think of the service, the freedom to say no can be as important as having the freedom to say yes. I only ask for payment after the second session has ended, you will receive a payment request later that day and you can then decide to continue if you wish. If you do not pay then therapy ends at that point, all I ask is that you inform me of your choice and the payment request is cancelled.

First session ethics

I would never pay for a therapy session before I have been able to talk to the therapist, just like I would never engage a lawyer before discussing the case first or pay a dentist before getting a quote and why should therapy be any different? Any  therapist may not agree to see you for further sessions as a client because of ethical or other issues and all therapists need to check for any risks that may arise before therapy starts as much as it is possible to do so.

Confidentiality

All information within the client and therapist relationship is held in strict confidence and no information is made available to others in any form what so ever. I do not record conversations and only keep the very basic information. This information is kept encrypted and secure and can only be viewed by me. My computer has the very latest security software that includes a fire wall and no information I keep is left unencrypted or available to others. Client confidentiality is strictly recognized as imperative: there is no routine circumstance where your confidentiality would not be unconditional. There can be some exceptional cases when confidentiality cannot be kept: where you could be a danger to yourself, or to others. In such unusual circumstances, you would be informed that I am required to act appropriately in passing that information on if possible. Therapists are required by law to report suspected child abuse or serious neglect and terrorism offences to the appropriate authorities. Some therapists promise total confidentiality but forget to inform the client that in truth there is no total confidentiality as it is not possible to provide it. The truth is no security can be totally secure, all any one can do is reduce the risk as much as is possible to do so. One way to reduce risk is by reducing the amount of information stored or kept on file, one of the reasons why I do not keep detailed information about any client or record therapy sessions is to remove the possibility of a breach of confidentiality as much as is possible to do so. Allowing the client to remain totally anonymous if they wish is one way to further reduce the risk. All software can be hacked and documents stolen, all cabinets and offices can be broken into and people can breach trust inadvertently or accidentally. Whether you are promised hippa compliance or https that still does not guarantee total confidentiality, any statement promising any such guarantee is bad information at best and being untruthful at worst. There is nothing wrong with saying totally confidential as most people know what it refers to but it still needs to be clarified to help people to make an informed choice on the facts provided as I have done here. Confidentiality is of paramount importance to the client therapist relationship, online therapy is no different to any other way of delivering therapy in that confidentiality has to be safe guarded as far as it is possible to do so.
